2005 Special Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Rated Outstanding By Wine and Spirits
“This is the best vintage of Special Reserve we have tasted - a modern classic from Diamond Mountain. It combines the sophisticated, dark minerality given by the site, with the luscious black currant and black berry flavor of well-grown cabernet. The dimensions of the wine haven’t been ripened away; the winemaking, emphasizes layers of flavor and refinement, more dynamic than powerful. The cool tone of the fruit will sustain the wine through a long arc of flavor development in the cellar.

"Reverie has possibly produced their greatest cabernet sauvignon ever. But be forewarned it needs cellaring, not a long time but just enough to soften and sweeten a bit. Right now, the tannins shove to the front of the line pushing aside the delicious black berries and currants. But the wine has Bordeaux like elegance. A few years in the bottle will help resolve things."

Bright, deep ruby-red. Pungent cassis, licorice, bitter chocolate, mocha and mint on the nose. Sweet, suave and densely packed, with lovely depth of dark fruit, earth and spice flavors. At once chewy and seamless. Finishes with sweet tannins and noteworthy persistence and class. A classic example of the Diamond Mountain District, with the structure to age. I’d give this one six to eight years in the cellar. The 2005 harvest at this estate took place during the second half of October.

"Few wines out of Napa Valley need age as much as this one does. That's due to its mountain origins and the cool vintage, which combine to make the tannins pushy and hard. But once they start to fall out, the blackberry and currant flavors should emerge, pure and sweet. Best after 2010, but if you open it before that, decant.

Dark scents of black raspberry yield to tension with pungent oak and iron- firm tannins. This is to young to drink on release, but all the elements are there to allow the wine to fill out it's structure with age.

100% cabernet sauvignon. Saturated deep ruby. Musky aromas of crushed cassis, cranberry, violet, bitter chocolate and mint. The crushed dark fruit flavors show plenty of richness but are distinctly less pliant today than the cabernet franc. Still, the tannins are sweet and lush. This backward wine will need time.

Its compact impressions of ripe currants reflect the restraint of mountain-grown fruit, yet there is both a fair sense of solidity at work here, and its integral tannins seem far less austere. There is even a slight gleaning of polish about it, and we expect that a few years of undisturbed rest in the cellar should go a long way in bringing this one to its peak.

An herbal take on Cabernet Franc, this starts off with a light, resinous pine character and develops meaty richness as it takes on air.

Good red-ruby. Musky aromas of black cherry, flowers, licorice and tar. Supple, pliant and fruity; in a softer but elegant style, with sweet, easygoing tannins. Finishes with lovely length. The crop level here was 2.7 tons per acre, which proprietor Kiken described as “relatively high” for this site.

There’s a fine wine in here, but it needs a little time for those pesky tannins to soften. They coat the mouth with astringency, making it hard to appreciate the fruit. But the fruit is there, in the form of pure, sweet cherries. It’s not a long-term ager, but a year or three in the cellar should make this soft, gentle wine more beautiful.

Reverie's mixed-varietal Meritage gets an enthusiastic thumbs-up vote both for its deep and generous sense of optimally ripened, currant and black-cherry fruit and for its fine structure. It is laced with complexing notes of loam, black olives, pepper and rich oak, and its ample extracts are as evident at the end as they are at the start. Its nominal tannins bring a nice bit of grip without being overbearingly tough, and all signs point to a very promising future some five or six years down the line.

“This blend of five Bordeaux varietals grows on the estate. It melds deep black raspberry flavor, with peppery, cabernet franc tannins. Oak enriches the wine, while the tannins remain lean and firm.”
